Hungary Sees Record Voter Turnout

Hungary’s parliamentary elections are experiencing record turnout, reaching 74.23% by 5 PM local time, surpassing previous levels.

As of 5 PM on Sunday, voter turnout in Hungary’s parliamentary elections reached a record 74.23%, according to the National Election Office (NVI).

This surpasses the final turnout of 69.59% in the 2022 elections. By the same time in 2022, turnout stood at 62.92% nationwide.

Participation Numbers

A total of 5,587,935 people had cast their votes by 5 PM. A record number – over 90,000 – registered to vote at foreign representations, and nearly 224,000 voted by mail.

The number of registered voters is 7,527,742.

Parliamentary Election Details

Hungarians are electing 199 deputies to the National Assembly (Orszaggyules), a unicameral parliament. 106 are elected in single-member districts, and 93 are chosen from national party lists.

In each district, the candidate with the most votes wins, even without a majority.

Voting Rights

Eligible Hungarian voters within the country can cast two votes: one for a candidate in their district and another for a party list or national minority list. Voters abroad cast only one vote, for a national list.

Notable Voters

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, opposition leader Péter Magyar, and President Tamás Sulyok have already cast their votes.

Vote Counting and Results

Vote counting will begin immediately after polling stations close at 7 PM, with preliminary results expected around 8 PM, including the percentage of votes tallied.

Turnout at 3 PM

By 3 PM, 4,968,713 people had voted, representing 66.01% of eligible voters. This exceeds the final results from 1990 (65.11%), 2010 (64.02%), and 2014 (61.24%).
