Hurricane Kristin Strikes Portugal; Polish Embassy Issues Warning

Polish Embassy warns citizens of dangerous conditions as hurricane causes widespread destruction in Portugal.

Polish Embassy Alert

Orkan Kristin is causing devastation in Portugal, with unprecedented snowfall in neighboring Spain. Several hundred roads are impassable, and rail transport is not functioning in northern and eastern Portugal. The embassy reports problems with communication and food supply, urging citizens to exercise special caution and follow emergency services’ instructions.

The Polish diplomatic mission in Portugal advises against staying in open areas and near water reservoirs due to the risk of landslides and being swept away by currents.

Natural Disaster Declared

On Thursday, the Portuguese government declared a state of natural disaster effective from January 28 to February 1 due to widespread damage. The declaration applies to municipalities particularly affected by the cyclone and others that suffered serious consequences, especially from flooding.

The state of disaster enables humanitarian aid for affected populations, support for victims, infrastructure and environmental reconstruction, and financial assistance for rebuilding homes, businesses, vehicles, and farms.

Hurricane’s Impact

On the morning of January 28, Hurricane Kristin struck Portugal, causing destruction nationwide with winds reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h. The storm destroyed homes, uprooted trees, and topped power poles, leaving over 500,000 households without electricity.

According to euronews.com, at least six people have died. Leiria municipality was particularly affected, with its mayor Goncalo Lusa describing “dantean scenes” – churches and sports centers without roofs, many homes missing roof tiles, and completely destroyed homes and cars.
