Iran Claims Responsibility for Dimona Attack
Iran stated the attack on Dimona, home to Israel’s primary nuclear research facility, was a response to a prior attack on the uranium enrichment facility in Natanz. Israel has denied responsibility for the Natanz attack.
No Damage to Nuclear Facility Reported
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported receiving no information regarding damage to the nuclear facility.
Casualties Reported in Israeli Strike
Over 54 people were injured in the Iranian strike, including one critically, according to the Jerusalem Post. Reports indicate a direct hit on a municipal building.
Israeli Air Defenses Failed to Intercept Rocket
The Israeli military confirmed its air defenses failed to intercept the Iranian rocket. An investigation into the incident has been launched.
Dimona Nuclear Research Center
Dimona is located approximately 35 kilometers west of the Dead Sea. The Shimon Peres Nuclear Research Center, commonly known as the Dimona Reactor, is 13 kilometers from the city and is widely believed to be part of Israel’s undeclared nuclear weapons program. Israel, which is not a party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, neither confirms nor denies possessing such weapons.
Tehran’s Prior Threat
In early March, Tehran threatened to attack facilities in Dimona if Israel and the United States pursued regime change in Iran, according to Iranian military officials.
