ICE Agents Detain 5-Year-Old; Guardian Claims Used as “Bait”

ICE agents in Minnesota detained a 5-year-old boy, with authorities claiming he was used as bait to gain entry to his home.

ICE Detained Five-Year-Old

In Minnesota, ICE agents detained five-year-old Liam Ramos in the afternoon on his home’s driveway, shortly after his father picked him up from kindergarten. The child’s guardian from Columbia Heights Public School District claims he was used as “bait” to allow ICE officers entry into the house.

“Why detain a five-year-old? You can’t tell me that this child was recognized as a brutal criminal,” said Zena Stenvik. Liam’s family reportedly complies with the law, and their asylum case is in progress. No deportation order has been issued in their case.

Authorities Deny Child Was Target

The Department of Homeland Security stated that “the child was not the target of ICE.” The agents were tasked with detaining the boy’s father, who reportedly fled when officers approached, leaving his son behind. For the child’s safety, one ICE officer remained with him, according to the department spokeswoman.

Those being detained are asked whether their children should accompany them or be placed in the care of designated individuals, the department added.

Multiple Minors Detained

The Columbia Heights Public School District reported that ICE agents detained at least four minors on Tuesday. This included a 17-year-old who was reportedly pulled from a car by masked officers while on his way to school, according to CBS News.
