The Pod Dębem ice cream parlor in Pszczyna has cancelled its annual tradition of giving free ice cream to students with high grades after receiving a letter from the Office of the Ombudsman for Children.
Conflict Over Academic Rewards
The Pod Dębem parlor in Pszczyna found itself at the center of a national debate after announcing it would end its 25-year tradition of providing free ice cream to students with honors. The decision followed correspondence from the Office of the Ombudsman for Children, which the owners cited as the reason for halting the initiative.
For two and a half decades, the shop rewarded students on the last day of school with a free scoop, a tradition started by the late Tadeusz Hałas and continued by Jolanta Hałas. Hundreds of portions were typically distributed each year.
Concerns Over Psychological Pressure
The Office of the Ombudsman for Children stated that the letter was not a formal ban but a suggestion. The office argued that rewards tied strictly to academic performance could create unhealthy competition, psychological pressure, and the exclusion of students who do not achieve top results.
This stance aligns with the office’s ongoing campaign, “Stop discounts for grades,” which emphasizes that every child is valuable regardless of academic achievements. The office has previously urged entrepreneurs to avoid promotions that differentiate children based on report cards.
Public and Political Fallout
Ombudsman Monika Horna-Cieślak denied issuing a prohibition, labeling claims of a ban as manipulation. She proposed an alternative inclusive event for all children on June 26, though the parlor owners expressed skepticism regarding the logistics and their role in the new initiative.
The controversy drew comments from high-level officials, including Education Minister Barbara Nowacka, who criticized the intervention. Local figures also defended the parlor’s gesture as a simple act of kindness, while the owners have requested privacy due to the overwhelming volume of inquiries and harassment following the publicity.
