On October 4 the Israeli Defense Forces were reportedly ordered to suspend offensive operations in Gaza under pressure from Donald Trump, but Palestinians say attacks are still ongoing.
IDF Ordered to Halt Offensive Operations
The Times of Israel reported that the IDF had received a directive to stop offensive actions in Gaza, allegedly triggered by Trump’s push for a ceasefire.
Earlier the IDF had communicated that its Chief of Staff, Brig‑Gen Eyal Zamir, instructed soldiers to “eliminate any threat.”
Defensive Operations Continue
Despite the pause order, the IDF stated it remains engaged in defensive operations against threats.
Army spokesperson Brigadier‑Colonel Avichay Adraee warned Palestinians that returning to Gaza is “highly dangerous” and urged them to stay away from areas where IDF units operate.
Palestinian Reports of Ongoing Attacks
Al Jazeera, which cites Gaza’s civil defense agency, reports that Israel has conducted dozens of air strikes and artillery barrages in the city despite Trump’s appeal.
Seven civilians were killed on the Saturday morning, according to an AFP interview with civil defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal.
Hamas Prepares for Negotiations
A senior Hamas representative, speaking anonymously to AFP, said the group is ready to start talks on a ceasefire agreement brokered by President Trump.
Hamas also declared its willingness on Friday to release all hostages held in Gaza, though it did not address calls for disarmament or governance changes.
International Reactions
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed Hamas’s willingness to halt hostilities, tweeting that immediate ceasefire and hostage release are within reach.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu dismissed Hamas’s response as not positive but acknowledged Trump’s efforts as the only viable option.
