IMGW Issues Frost Warning as Spring Remains Distant

Poland’s IMGW has issued frost warnings for several regions, with temperatures expected to drop to as low as -15°C before any signs of spring appear.

The IMGW has issued a frost warning effective until 8:00 AM on Friday, February 20. It covers the voivodeships of Pomerania, Kuyavia-Pomerania, Warmia-Masuria, Masovia, Podlaskie, and Lublin, as well as the northern part of Łódź voivodeship. “A drop in minimum temperature is expected at night to as low as -15 degrees Celsius in places. Maximum daytime temperatures will range from -3 to -1 degrees. Wind speeds will range from 5 km/h to 15 km/h,” stated the forecasters.

GDDKiA Reports Road Conditions

The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways issued a statement, saying “All national roads are passable. In the past 24 hours, vehicles for winter maintenance were deployed 1,779 times. We have used over 6,000 tons of salt.” According to the report, snowfall may occur in the voivodeships of Silesia, Świętokrzyskie, Lesser Poland, and Subcarpathian.

Weekend Weather Forecast

Forecasters expect Saturday to be cloudy, with rainfall that will transition from west to east into rain mixed with snow and back to rain. Daytime temperatures will range from -3°C in the northeast to 3°C in the center and 7°C in the west. At night, thermometers will show from -5°C in the southeast to 0°C in the center to 3°C in the northwest. Sunday may be slightly warmer as frost is expected to subside during the day. Maximum temperatures will range from 2°C in the east, 7°C in the center to 10°C in the southwest.

When Will Spring Arrive?

According to the long-term forecast prepared by IMGW, temperatures will gradually become warmer from the end of February to the end of March. Analysis of average maximum temperatures shows that increasingly clear signs of spring will appear in the second half of March, when temperatures may reach 10-11°C in the south, west, and central parts of Poland. It will be slightly cooler in the north, where thermometers will show 7-8°C.
