Poland’s IMGW issued warnings of varying severity as water levels exceeded alarm thresholds on three rivers in multiple voivodeships on March 5.
Highest-Level Warnings Issued
Level III warnings (flooding with alarm level exceedance) are in effect in parts of the Masovian Voivodeship – in the Wkra river basin to the mouth of the Łydyni river – and in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in the Guber river basin. These warnings will remain active until 10:00 AM on Thursday, March 5.
According to IMGW data, alarm levels have been exceeded at three hydrological stations: Prosna on the Guber river (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship) and Szreńsk on the Mławka river and Trzciniec on the Wkra river (Masovian Voivodeship).
Level II Warnings in Four Regions
Additionally, IMGW has issued Level II warnings (flooding exceeding warning levels) for parts of several voivodeships.
In the Pomeranian and Warmian-Masurian Voivodeships, the alerts will be in effect until Friday afternoon, while in the Masovian and Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeships, they will continue until Thursday morning.
Lowest-Level Warnings in Northeastern Poland
Level I warnings (sudden water level increases) are in effect in parts of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship – including the basins of the Upper and Lower Łyna, Pisa, Szkwa, Rozogi and Gołdap rivers – and in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, in the basins of the Biebrza, Niemen, Supraśl, Węgorapa, Upper Ełk and Upper Lega rivers. These alerts will be active until 10:00 AM on Thursday.
Water levels have exceeded warning levels at eight hydrological stations.
Understanding Hydrological Warnings
IMGW reminds that hydrological warnings are issued in cases of predicted or ongoing river flooding, sudden water level increases, or ice phenomena. A Level I warning indicates possible local, short-term exceedances of warning levels, Level II indicates exceedance of warning levels with possible achievement of alarm levels, and Level III indicates exceedance of alarm levels with an increasing trend.
