On December 14 the National Prosecutor’s Office filed an indictment against former minister Antoni Macierewicz, accusing him of revealing state secrets from April 2018 to May 2022.

Indictment Filed Against Antoni Macierewicz

On 14 December a prosecutor from Investigation Team No 4 of the National Prosecutor’s Office submitted an indictment to the Warsaw District Court against Antoni Macierewicz. He is charged with disclosing, as a public official, information marked “Strictly Secret,” “Secret,” “Confidential,” and “Reserved” during the period from 11 April 2018 to 22 May 2022, and information he accessed in his official capacity. The alleged disclosures concern documents he supposedly obtained while heading the subcommittee investigating the Smolensk air disaster.

Maceriewicz Denies Guilt

The National Prosecutor’s Office stressed that the justification for the indictment is entirely confidential. It also noted that Macierewicz was notified of the charges on 3 September. The PiS MP rejected the accusations and declined to provide explanations.

Investigation Findings and Possible Sentence

The probe into Macierewicz’s conduct began on 18 November of the previous year. Prosecutors concluded that he violated the law by allegedly supplying unclassified information derived from documents bearing secrecy clauses and from analyses of the Smolensk disaster. He faces up to five years’ imprisonment. On 5 August, the Sejm approved imposing criminal liability on Macierewicz.
