Indonesia issues Trump ultimatum after Iran attacks, threatening withdrawal from his Peace Council unless it backs Palestinian statehood.
Indonesia’s Diplomatic Engagement
On the evening of March 5, Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto met with Islamic scholars and community representatives. The meeting, announced by the State Secretariat, focused on diplomatic efforts for Middle East peace and Indonesia’s role in Donald Trump’s Peace Council aimed at ending the Gaza conflict.
Conditional Peace Council Membership
Former Education Minister Muhadjir Effendy reported that President Prabowo clarified his involvement in the Peace Council was not immediate but a long-term process. He discussed this with regional leaders, particularly from the Persian Gulf, who then agreed to join, part of an “inside fight” strategy to promote peace interests on the forum.
Two-State Solution Demand
Indonesia advocates for a two-state solution, establishing a Palestinian state existing alongside Israel. President Prabowo emphasized that his primary demand within the Peace Council remains Palestinian independence. Withdrawal would occur if the Council ceases supporting this goal.
Withdrawal Trigger
According to Hanif Alatas from the Islamic Front, the President stated Indonesia would withdraw if Palestine gained no further benefits and it conflicted with national interests. The Indonesian Ulema Council had previously urged withdrawal due to the U.S. role in the Iran war. Foreign Minister Sugiono noted all Peace Council discussions were suspended due to the Iran conflict.
