Polish authorities have officially suspended the investigation into the May 2024 killing of Sergeant Mateusz Sitek, as the primary suspect, a Moroccan national, remains at large in Belarus.
The Investigation and Legal Status
Following the examination of over 140 witnesses, the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office identified a Moroccan citizen as the perpetrator of the fatal stabbing. On July 21, 2025, prosecutors formally issued charges of murder with particular cruelty against the suspect.
The Military Division of the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office confirmed on June 9 that the two-year investigation is now suspended. Although a warrant and European Arrest Warrant were issued, the suspect’s location outside of Poland prompted a formal request to Minsk in December 2025 for his arrest and extradition, which remains unfulfilled.
Details of the Fatal Attack
Sergeant Mateusz Sitek was fatally wounded on May 28, 2024, while serving at the Polish-Belarusian border near Dubicze Cerkiewne. While attempting to block a breach in the steel border barrier using a shield, the soldier was stabbed in the chest by a man who reached through the fence.
During the attack, the wounded soldier and a Border Guard officer providing aid were pelted with stones and branches by the group attempting to force the crossing. Sitek was transported to a military hospital in Warsaw, where he succumbed to his injuries on June 6, 2024. He was posthumously promoted to sergeant and awarded the Gold Medal for Merit for National Defense.
