Iran Attacks and Seizes Vessels in Strait of Hormuz

Iran fired upon three commercial ships and seized two others in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, escalating tensions in the vital waterway.

Iran Attacks Commercial Vessels

Iran attacked three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, with two of the vessels subsequently seized. The attacks occurred on Wednesday along one of the world’s most important shipping lanes.

At least three container ships came under fire in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz, confirmed by maritime security sources and a British maritime monitoring center. The most serious incident involved a Liberian-flagged vessel hit by gunfire and anti-tank grenades northeast of Oman.

The ship’s captain reported that an Iranian patrol boat belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps approached and opened fire. The ship’s bridge was damaged, but there was no fire or leakage, and the crew was unharmed.

Further Attacks and Seizures

Shortly after, two more container ships were attacked. A Panama-flagged vessel was targeted approximately eight nautical miles west of the Iranian coast, but was not hit, and its crew remained safe. A second Liberian-flagged ship was also targeted without damage or injuries.

The captain of one of the attacked ships – managed by a Greek shipowner – emphasized there was no warning or radio contact before the firing began.

Vessel Seizures and Iranian Rationale

Concurrently with the attacks, the Iranian navy seized two ships. The Tasnim news agency reported the vessels were detained on charges of “disrupting order and security” in the strategic waterway. Details regarding the flags or owners of the seized ships were not provided.

Iranian authorities did not specify the actions that led to the detentions.

Tehran’s Strategy and Regional Tensions

Experts suggest these actions align with a broader Iranian strategy to control maritime traffic and exert political pressure by restricting freedom of navigation.

The attacks occurred amid rising regional tensions, with Iran imposing restrictions on navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in response to military actions by the US and Israel, and a blockade of Iranian ports. Prior to the conflict escalation, approximately 20 percent of global oil and LNG supplies passed through the strait, making it a key point in the global economy.
