Iran Attacks Refineries in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia

Iran launched attacks Thursday on two Kuwaiti refineries and an oil processing facility in Saudi Arabia, escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Iranian Strikes Target Kuwaiti Refineries

Iran attacked two refineries belonging to Kuwait’s National Oil Company (KNPC) on Thursday. The attacks prompted a fire at the Mina Abdullah refinery, as reported by the Kuwaiti government on X.

The Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery was also targeted by a drone, according to Iran International, an exiled opposition portal. Kuwait’s state news agency KUNA reported that both fires were extinguished.

Saudi Arabian Refinery Also Hit

Iran also targeted the SAMERF refinery in Yanbu port on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast. The Saudi Ministry of Defense stated that damage assessment is underway, but provided no details, according to Reuters.

Earlier, the ministry reported intercepting a ballistic missile aimed at the port.

Refinery Ownership and Location

The attacked refinery is owned by Saudi Aramco and Mobil Yanbu Refining Company Inc., a subsidiary of ExxonMobil. The facility is located approximately 200 km west of Medina.

Escalation Amidst Wider Conflict

Thursday marks the 20th day of the conflict in the Middle East, which began on February 28 with Israeli and U.S. airstrikes on Iran. Iran retaliated with attacks on Israel and other Middle Eastern countries, targeting both American bases and civilian infrastructure, including airports and petrochemical facilities.

The Iranian attacks overnight caused a sharp increase in fuel prices.
