Conflicting reports emerged Wednesday regarding the status of the Strait of Hormuz, as Iran signaled a potential withdrawal from a ceasefire and responded to Israeli strikes in Lebanon.
Iran Threatens Response to Attacks on Hezbollah
A commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that aggression against Hezbollah is aggression against Iran, warning of a “harsh response” to Israeli actions. Iran’s state news agency Tasnim reported that Iran will withdraw from a two-week truce if Israeli attacks on Lebanon continue.
Strait of Hormuz Reportedly Remains Closed
Several ships in the Persian Gulf received messages from the Iranian navy stating the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, according to Reuters and the Associated Press. This followed an earlier announcement of a suspension of movement through the strait.
US Claims Iran Assured Strait Reopening
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Iran assured the US of resuming movement through the Strait of Hormuz, but acknowledged a discrepancy between public statements and private assurances. She indicated it may “take some time” for ships to resume transit, noting a private observation of increased traffic.
Bloomberg Reports Continued Paralysis
Bloomberg News reported that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained paralyzed hours after the announced ceasefire. Maritime transport analyst Lars Jensen stated that little has changed and it will take days for captains to regain confidence in safe passage.
Iran Links Strait Reopening to Lebanon Attacks
An anonymous Iranian official indicated the Strait of Hormuz could reopen on Thursday or Friday, but in a limited capacity and subject to Tehran’s conditions. This follows Israeli military strikes targeting nearly 100 Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.
Israeli Strikes Intensify in Lebanon
The Israeli army conducted strikes on approximately 100 Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on Wednesday, marking the most intense wave of attacks since March 2nd. Reports from Al-Jazeera indicate at least 254 people were killed and 1154 injured in the attacks.
Trump Downplays Link Between Ceasefire and Lebanon Conflict
Former President Donald Trump stated that the ceasefire with Iran does not concern Lebanon or Israeli attacks on Hezbollah, describing it as a “separate fight.”
