Iran Fires on Ships in Strait of Hormuz After “Ignored Warnings”

Iranian state media reported that forces opened fire on four commercial vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz without authorization early Thursday, forcing the ships to turn back.

The Strait of Hormuz Incident

Iranian military forces fired upon four commercial ships during the night from Wednesday to Thursday, May 28. According to Iranian state broadcaster Irib, the vessels were targeted for attempting to pass through the strategic Strait of Hormuz without prior coordination with Iranian authorities.

The incident occurred at approximately 00:35 local time. Officials stated that warning shots were fired after the ships disregarded instructions, ultimately forcing them to reverse course. The report did not specify the origin, flag, or type of the vessels involved.

Blockade and Regional Tensions

Iran has declared that the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping lane, will remain blocked until a final peace agreement is reached to end the conflict that began with U.S. and Israeli actions in late February.

Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s supreme political and spiritual leader, stated on Tuesday that Persian Gulf nations would no longer serve as a shield for American bases. He asserted on Telegram that the United States would no longer find a safe port in the region.

Military Presence and Recent Hostilities

Removing American influence from the Middle East has been a core objective of Iranian foreign policy since the Islamic Revolution. Experts estimate that between 40,000 and 50,000 U.S. personnel are stationed in the region, with bases located in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.

Reuters reported that the U.S. military conducted fresh strikes on Wednesday against an Iranian military facility that Washington claimed threatened U.S. forces and commercial shipping. While the report noted that Americans intercepted multiple Iranian assets, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has not yet officially confirmed these recent strikes.
