Iran has dismissed Donald Trump’s ultimatum regarding the Strait of Hormuz and presented its own prerequisites for engaging in “lasting peace” negotiations, Reuters reports.
Iran Rejects Trump’s Ultimatum, Presents Conditions
Iran has rejected an ultimatum issued by U.S. President Donald Trump and has outlined its conditions for entering into peace talks, according to a high-ranking Iranian source cited by Reuters on Tuesday.
Tehran has also rejected proposals for a temporary ceasefire, instead demanding preconditions for discussions regarding a “lasting peace.”
Demands Include Halt to Attacks and Reparations
Iran is demanding that the U.S. and Israel immediately cease attacks and guarantee they will not resume, as well as provide compensation for damages incurred during the conflict.
Transit Fees for the Strait of Hormuz
As part of a permanent peace agreement, Iran is also seeking to impose fees on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global route for oil and gas from the Persian Gulf. These transit fees would vary based on vessel type and cargo.
Tehran’s 10-Point Plan
Following the rejection of a U.S. peace plan delivered via Pakistan, Tehran proposed a 10-point plan to end the conflict. This plan also included demands for a halt to attacks by the U.S. and Israel, the lifting of sanctions on Iran, and the implementation of transit fees for ships.
Additional Demands: Lebanon and Allies
Tehran further demands that Israel cease fighting Hezbollah in Lebanon and end attacks on Iran’s allies. According to the Emirati portal Gulf Business News, Iran announced it would impose a $2 million fee on each ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz, sharing the revenue with Oman.
The Strait of Hormuz, the narrowest point of the Persian Gulf, lies in the territorial waters of Iran and Oman, but is internationally recognized as a waterway – a status Iran does not acknowledge. The collected funds would be used for national reconstruction, not reparations for damages caused by Iran to neighboring countries.
Trump’s Ultimatum
The Iranian proposal came after President Trump issued an ultimatum: reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face intensified attacks.
