Iran Executes PMOI/MEK Members

Iran executed two men belonging to the People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) by hanging on Saturday. According to the Mizan judiciary portal, the convicted individuals were accused of involvement in numerous acts of terrorism.

Background of the People’s Mujahedin

The People’s Mujahedin have sought to overthrow the Iranian monarchy since the 1960s and opposed Western imperialism, combining elements of Marxist ideology with Shia Islam.

While initially supporting the Islamic Revolution, they clashed with authorities in Tehran in the 1980s and subsequently operated from exile. Until the early 21st century, they functioned as an armed organization and were designated as a terrorist organization by the European Union and the USA until 2012.

Amnesty International’s Concerns

Amnesty International has warned of further executions in Iran, including those of individuals detained during mass anti-government protests in January.

Recent Executions and Potential Future Cases

Four other members of the group were executed earlier this week. According to PMOI/MEK, all six were arrested and sentenced by a revolutionary court at the end of 2024.

On March 19th, four individuals detained in connection with the January protests were executed. Amnesty also reports that five young protesters, previously sentenced to death, may be executed soon, according to Al-Jazeera.
