Iran Shells Dimona in Israel, Targeting Area Near Nuclear Reactor

Iran launched rockets toward the Israeli city of Dimona on Tuesday, striking buildings near the Dimona Nuclear Research Center.

Iranian Attack on Dimona

Iran shelled the city of Dimona in southern Israel on Tuesday, impacting structures within the city, according to the Times of Israel.

Approximately 20 people were reportedly injured in the attack. Rescue services confirmed a direct hit on a municipal building.

Israeli Response and Aftermath

The Israeli military dispatched search and rescue teams to the site following the initial barrage. Air raid sirens sounded again in the city later that evening, indicating another Iranian rocket launch towards the area.

Strategic Location of Dimona

Dimona is located approximately 35 kilometers west of the Dead Sea. The Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Center, commonly known as the Dimona Reactor, lies 13 kilometers from the city.

The Dimona Reactor is widely believed to be part of Israel’s undeclared nuclear weapons program. Israel, not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, neither confirms nor denies possessing such weapons.

Prior Iranian Threats

In early March, Tehran threatened to attack facilities in Dimona should Israel and the United States attempt to change the regime in Iran, as reported by the ISNA news agency citing an Iranian military official.
