Iran launched a retaliatory attack on Israel and neighboring countries using missiles and drones, resulting in civilian deaths and regional unrest on April 17-18.
Retaliatory Attacks & Weaponry
According to the Israeli military, Iran employed cluster missiles in the attack, which contain smaller payloads designed to disperse over a wide area. Police reported a fragment from one such missile struck an apartment building, killing an elderly couple and injuring six others, with a total of 10 impact sites.
Iran’s Motivation
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard issued a statement via state television, claiming the strikes were in response to the killing of Laridjani, a key Iranian official described as effectively running the country following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in February during initial clashes with the US and Israel.
Regional Impact & Israeli Defense
Israel is under attack by Iranian missiles and drones, along with countries in the Persian Gulf. The Israeli army reported approximately 300 ballistic missiles were launched last week, around half with cluster warheads. While Israel possesses advanced multi-layered air defense, some projectiles penetrated, hitting residential buildings and causing at least 14 fatalities.
Attacks on Neighboring States
Instability extended throughout the region. An Iranian missile reportedly fell near Al Minhad base in the United Arab Emirates, housing Australian troops, according to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Drone and missile attacks were also reported in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait.
Political Fallout & Resignations
The director of Israel’s National Counter-Terrorism Center resigned in protest against the war with Iran.
UAE & Saudi Arabia Responses
Albanese stated no Australian personnel were injured, but the strike caused a fire and minor damage to a residential building and medical facility. The UAE Ministry of Defense reported it was responding to threats from Iranian missiles and drones. Saudi Arabia’s defense ministry confirmed neutralizing 13 drones and a ballistic missile, with debris falling near Prince Sultan Air Base, causing no damage.
Diplomatic Efforts & Regional Consultation
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry announced an emergency meeting of Arab and Islamic foreign ministers in Riyadh to discuss ways to support regional security and stability.
Further Attacks & Defensive Measures
Qatar’s armed forces intercepted a missile attack targeting the country, with reports of an explosion in the capital, Doha. Kuwait activated its air defense systems, and Bahraini authorities ordered residents to shelters. The U.S. embassy in Baghdad was also targeted by a drone attack.
