Iranian drone crashes at Azerbaijani airport near border, injuring two civilians as tensions escalate in the region.
Attack Location and Casualties
The attacked airport is located approximately 10 kilometers from the Iranian border. In the incident, an airport building was damaged and two civilians were injured.
Azerbaijan’s Response
“This attack on Azerbaijani territory contradicts international norms and laws and contributes to increased tensions in the region,” stated Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.
The Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to receive an official protest note. The statement indicated that Azerbaijan reserves the right to take “retaliatory measures” against Tehran.
“We demand that the Islamic Republic of Iran explain the matter as soon as possible, provide an explanation, and take necessary measures to prevent such incidents from happening again,” the statement said.
Geopolitical Context
Nakhchivan is territorially separated from the rest of Azerbaijan. It constitutes about 6 percent of the country’s territory, with a 40-kilometer (25-mile) wide strip of Armenia between the exclave and Azerbaijan. It also borders Turkey, a close ally of Azerbaijan, as well as Iran.
Strategic Implications
Neutralizing each Iranian rocket costs 10 times more than its value. Replenishing stocks of advanced interceptor missiles takes much longer than the simpler ammunition used by Iran.
