In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Trump warned that if Iran doesn’t allow the Strait of Hormuz to remain open, “they will lose every power plant and every other facility in the entire country.”
Russia Calls for De-escalation
On Sunday, Russia’s Foreign Ministry expressed hope that efforts to de-escalate tensions around Iran and normalize the situation in the Middle East would be effective. Moscow believes a return to negotiations and an end to ultimatums from the U.S. would contribute to this process.
Strait of Hormuz Closure and Oil Prices
Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz to navigation in early March, blocking oil and gas exports from the Persian Gulf. While some ships are permitted passage, conditions regarding their ownership and cargo apply, leading to reduced oil supply and increased prices.
Escalation of Conflict
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East began on February 28th with a U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran. Tehran responded by shelling Israel, U.S. bases, and civilian infrastructure in Gulf states, including airports and petrochemical facilities.
