Iranian Navy Commander Tangsiri Killed, Israel Claims Responsibility

Commander Alireza Tangsiri of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy was confirmed dead on Monday, with Israel alleging a targeted strike.

Death Confirmed, Israel Claims Strike

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed Tangsiri’s death on March 30th. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Tangsiri and other high-ranking Iranian commanders were killed in a “precise and lethal” strike.

The Israeli military stated Alireza Tangsiri was responsible for attacks on commercial ships.

Tangsiri’s Role and Responsibilities

Israeli sources reported the Iranian Navy commander died in an attack on the city of Bandar Abbas in southern Iran. According to the Israeli military, “Tangsiri was responsible for attacks on tankers and commercial vessels,” and “personally threatened freedom of navigation and trade in the Strait of Hormuz and international maritime zones.”

Background of Alireza Tangsiri

Tangsiri served as commander of the navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps since 2018, appointed by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. He was known for assertive statements emphasizing Iran’s dominance over the Strait of Hormuz.

Sanctions and Drone Oversight

The U.S. Treasury Department indicated Tangsiri oversaw drone and cruise missile tests and was sanctioned in 2019 and 2023. He also led a company involved in the production and testing of drones for the navy, which Iran uses to monitor the Strait of Hormuz.

Online Activity and Threats

“The New York Times” noted Tangsiri was very active on social media in recent weeks, posting information about the Strait of Hormuz, threatening attacks on U.S.-linked oil facilities, and warning the United States against attacking Khark Island, which handles 90% of Iran’s oil exports.

Israeli Military Assessment

The Israeli military emphasized that killing Tangsiri and the entire Iranian naval command is “another significant blow” to the command structure and its ability to conduct naval operations against Middle Eastern countries.
