Israel Claims Killing of Top Iranian Security Official

Israel asserts it has killed Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, in a recent strike, escalating tensions.

Israel Strikes Key Iranian Figure

Israeli forces conducted a strike targeting Ali Larijani, a prominent politician and Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Israeli Defense Minister Katz stated the operation was successful. A cryptic post appeared on Larijani’s X profile shortly after the announcement.

According to Israeli media and Reuters, the attack occurred overnight between March 16th and 17th during a series of strikes within Iran.

Broader Campaign Against Iranian Security Apparatus

Israeli military sources indicate the operation is part of a wider campaign aimed at Iran’s security leadership and structures linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Tehran has not yet officially commented on Larijani’s fate.

Larijani’s Post and Escalating Tensions

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced Larijani’s death Tuesday morning. Shortly after, a handwritten note attributed to Larijani appeared on his X profile, mentioning fallen Iranian sailors in a recent U.S. attack and announcing their funeral on Tuesday. The exact timing and authorship of the post remain unclear.

The post coincided with Iranian state media reports anticipating the release of a message from Larijani, while the Israeli army reported Iranian rocket fire towards northern Israel, signaling further escalation.

Who Was Ali Larijani?

Ali Larijani has been a highly influential figure in the Iranian power structure for years, previously serving as Speaker of Parliament and a key negotiator in Iran’s nuclear program. He resumed his role as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council in August 2025.

Following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in an Israeli raid on Tehran on February 28, 2026, Larijani was considered a key architect of state policy during the war, with some Western analyses suggesting he oversaw authorities during the transition period.

Significance of Larijani’s Potential Elimination

His influence and position within the power structure mean his elimination would be one of the most significant blows to Iranian leadership since the start of the current conflict.

Israel-Iran War Escalation

The attack on Larijani is part of the open phase of the war between Israel and Iran, which began in late February 2026 with extensive strikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities and command structures, including U.S. forces.

Israel has recently focused on eliminating high-ranking representatives of Iranian military and security structures, including General Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the Basij paramilitary force.

According to the Israeli General Staff, these actions aim to limit Iran’s ability to coordinate military operations and support armed groups in the region, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and Shiite militias in Iraq.

Iran Remains Silent, Region on Edge

Iranian authorities have neither confirmed nor denied reports of the attack on Larijani. The lack of an official statement from Tehran leaves his fate uncertain.

Simultaneously, the conflict is expanding to other countries in the region, with Iran conducting reciprocal missile and drone attacks on targets linked to the U.S. and its allies in the Persian Gulf, and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have caused serious disruptions to global oil trade.
