Israel is destroying key infrastructure in southern Lebanon, including the Qasmiyeh bridge, prompting condemnation from Lebanese President Michel Aoun and concerns of a ground invasion.
Lebanese President Condemns Israeli Attacks
Lebanese President Michel Aoun condemned Israel’s attacks and destruction of critical infrastructure in southern Lebanon, particularly the Qasmiyeh bridge on the Litani River and other bridges, according to a statement from his office.
“Violation of Sovereignty”
Aoun stated that these attacks constitute a dangerous escalation and a serious violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty, viewing them as a prelude to a ground invasion. This came after Israel announced its army had been ordered to destroy “all bridges” believed to be used by the pro-Iranian organization Hezbollah.
Concerns Over Buffer Zone
The President expressed concern that attacking the Litani River bridge, a vital link between southern Lebanon and the rest of the country, suggests Israel intends to create a buffer zone. Israeli forces have already destroyed three bridges in southern Lebanon in the last ten days.
Accelerated Demolition of Lebanese Homes
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that, along with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he instructed the military to accelerate the demolition of Lebanese homes in “frontline villages” to end threats to Israeli communities.
Over One Thousand Casualties in Lebanon
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, over one thousand people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory, including nearly 120 children, 80 women, and 40 medical personnel.
Israel-Iran Conflict and Hezbollah’s Response
Israel, along with the United States, has been engaged in conflict with Iran since February 28th. In retaliation, Hezbollah launched attacks on Israel in early March, prompting massive Israeli airstrikes across various parts of Lebanon. The stated goal of the operation is the complete destruction of Hezbollah. The Lebanese government banned Hezbollah from armed activity in March, but the organization refused to disarm.
American Alleged Spy in Iran
Monica Witt, an American, has been considered a fugitive and remains on the FBI’s list of most wanted spies since 2019. She is believed to live and operate in Tehran, and the Trump administration considered the extent to which she may have harmed their operations in Iran.
