Israel Irritated Trump Administration, Now Pursues New Strategy

The U.S. and Iran announced a two-week ceasefire, but Israel’s actions in Lebanon—and its strained relationship with Washington—are raising concerns.

Israel Has a New Tactic

According to reports, Israel is no longer receiving U.S. support to further war with Iran, and is attempting to weaken its adversary “without angering the American administration, which is already upset that Tel Aviv continued attacks on Lebanon.”

To this end, a new strategy has been developed to facilitate a U.S.-Iranian agreement preventing Tehran from possessing nuclear weapons that threaten Israel.

Preventing Sanctions Relief

Simultaneously, Israel seeks to prevent the easing of sanctions against Iran, fearing it could bolster the country’s radical leadership, according to six current and former Israeli security officials.

“Bibi Will Calm Down” the Military?

Tel Aviv intends to continue “a certain level of attacks on Lebanon,” potentially at a reduced intensity. Donald Trump stated that Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to limit Israeli operations in the area, saying he needs to be “a bit more restrained.”

Netanyahu Continues Military Action

Netanyahu has not confirmed this, and military actions continued Friday. However, Politico reports the Israeli premier instructed his team to begin negotiations with Lebanon regarding the disarmament of Hezbollah, with initial consultations planned in Washington next week.

Potential for Independent Action

Israel may also act independently to prevent the U.S. from accepting a compromise involving the seizure of highly enriched uranium while leaving the infrastructure for its continued production intact. Tel Aviv’s decision will be determined in the coming weeks.
