Israel sustained significant tank and bulldozer losses in clashes with Hezbollah in Lebanon on Thursday, marking its most substantial armored vehicle losses since the 1980s.
Hezbollah’s Offensive and Israeli Losses
Israel’s military experienced a “black day” on Thursday, losing at least 12 Merkava tanks and D9 bulldozers in fighting with Hezbollah, representing the most significant loss of Israeli armored vehicles in over 40 years. This followed an earlier incident two days prior where Hezbollah destroyed eight additional Israeli tanks.
The Iran-backed Hezbollah paramilitary group conducted multiple ambushes against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon on Tuesday and Thursday, resulting in the destruction of 18 Merkava main battle tanks and two remote-controlled D9 bulldozers.
Attacks on Command Centers and Rocket Fire
Hezbollah’s artillery also targeted Israeli command centers in Beit Gilel, Nagariya, and Shomera, which are responsible for operations in Lebanon. The group also shelled Israeli support attempting to evacuate casualties from those locations.
Concurrently, Iran launched over 60 rockets towards targets in Galilee, northern Israel.
Historical Context and Recent Conflicts
The Israeli armored forces last experienced comparable losses during the early stages of the 1980s Lebanon War, when Merkava and older US-supplied tanks clashed with newly deployed Syrian T-72 tanks.
Escalation Following Attacks on Iran
Following Israeli-American attacks on Iran on February 28th, Hezbollah opened a second front against Israel, prompting Israel to deploy troops to southern Lebanon.
Previous Losses in Gaza
MilitaryWatchMagazine noted that Merkava tanks had previously sustained losses during Israeli army operations against Palestinian paramilitary groups in the Gaza Strip since late 2023, though these were less substantial than those inflicted by the better-equipped and trained Hezbollah.
