Israeli Minister’s Birthday Party Sparks Controversy Over Police Ties and Death Penalty Tort

Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gwir’s 50th birthday celebration, attended by high-ranking police officers and featuring a gallows-themed cake, has drawn criticism and renewed focus on his policies.

Minister Accused of Undue Influence on Police

Critics allege Minister Ben-Gwir has improperly influenced the police, interfering in investigations, operational decisions during protests, and personnel promotions. The Israeli Supreme Court recently mandated Ben-Gwir, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miare to reach an agreement to limit such practices.

Police Officials Attend Minister’s Birthday

Ben-Gwir hosted a 50th birthday party on May 2nd, attended by senior police officers with the approval of Police Commissioner Danny Levy. Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett criticized the invitation of officers to the event.

Bennett Condemns Political Use of State Authority

Naftali Bennett stated that “tens of thousands of dedicated Israeli police officers deserve honest, effective, and state-serving leadership that sets a personal example.” He declared any official using their position for political gain should be immediately dismissed. Ben-Gwir responded to Bennett with a dismissive remark.

Gallows-Themed Cake Raises Concerns

The birthday cake, decorated with a gallows, sparked controversy, with some interpreting it as a reference to recently adopted legislation allowing the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of terrorism. Ben-Gwir authored the bill.

Death Penalty Law Targets Palestinians in West Bank

The law mandates execution by hanging within 90 days of a military court conviction, with no right to appeal or clemency. It applies only to Palestinians residing in the West Bank, who are subject to military courts unlike Jewish settlers.

Ben-Gwir Defiant After Death Penalty Passage

Ben-Gwir, a far-right politician advocating for the expulsion of Arabs from Israel and annexation of the West Bank, declared that “Israelis have made history” after the death penalty law was passed. He dismissed pressure from the European Union.
