Israeli Soldier Destroys Christ Figure in Lebanon; Military Condemns Act

An Israeli soldier was filmed destroying a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon, prompting condemnation from the IDF and a subsequent investigation.

IDF Investigation Launched After Incident

The incident began with a photograph published on X by Palestinian journalist Younis Tirawi, appearing to show an Israeli soldier damaging the head of a Jesus Christ statue during operations in southern Lebanon. IDF spokesperson Nadav Shoshani initially stated the IDF was verifying the photograph’s authenticity.

Shoshani affirmed that if verified, such actions would be inconsistent with IDF values and expected soldier conduct, and that the incident would be thoroughly investigated with appropriate measures taken if necessary.

IDF Confirms Authenticity and Severity

The Israeli military later confirmed the photograph’s authenticity, stating that an initial investigation determined the image depicted an IDF soldier operating in southern Lebanon.

The IDF emphasized the seriousness of the incident, stating the soldier’s behavior was “completely inconsistent with the values expected of their soldiers.” The Northern Command is investigating the matter, and appropriate action will be taken against those involved, according to the IDF.

IDF Pledges Restoration and Clarifies Operations

The IDF announced it would assist the local community in restoring the figure to its place. The military clarified that its operations in southern Lebanon are targeted at Hezbollah infrastructure, not civilian objects or religious symbols.

The IDF stated it does not intend to harm civilian infrastructure, including religious buildings and symbols, and is focused on eliminating terrorist infrastructure created by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Israel Occupies “Buffer Zone” in Lebanon

The Israeli military released a map on Sunday showing areas it has taken control of in southern Lebanon, indicating soldiers have taken control of dozens of villages. The occupied territory extends east to west, reaching 5-10 km into Lebanon.

Israeli authorities have announced plans to establish a buffer zone in the area, with Lebanese villages reportedly destroyed to protect northern Israel from attacks by the pro-Iranian terrorist organization Hezbollah.

Return of Displaced Civilians Uncertain

The military declined to comment on whether individuals displaced by Israeli attacks would be allowed to return to their homes. A source in Lebanese security services reported that Lebanese civilians have access to some villages along the Israeli-defined line separating northern Lebanon from the buffer zone, but are still prevented from reaching most villages within the zone itself.

Casualties and International Reactions

The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported 2294 deaths from Israeli attacks on Lebanon as of Friday. Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States had prohibited Israel from attacking Lebanon, a claim Israel disputes.

Ceasefire Agreement and Future Outlook

Authorities in Lebanon and Israel reached an agreement on a ceasefire, and displaced Lebanese citizens have begun returning to their homes.
