US and Israel launched attacks on Iran February 28; Trump initially planned to eliminate Iranian leadership within weeks.
Trump’s War Plans
US President Donald Trump stated February 28 that American operations against Iran were initially expected to last four to five weeks, with the possibility of extension. He claimed that senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Chamenei and Revolutionary Guard commander Mohammad Pakpur, were killed early in the conflict.
Israel’s Strategy
Israel Defense Minister Israel Katz declared March 4 that any leader appointed by Iran to continue its plans would be a target for elimination. Expert Marek Matusiak argued Israel aims to deeply weaken and fragment Iran, possessing no specific positive vision for the country’s future regardless of its governance form. He cited Israeli expert Danny Citrinowicz stating Israel’s goal is “complete destruction” of Iran, embracing chaos as a strategy.
Iranian Retaliation
Iran has launched retaliatory attacks against Middle Eastern nations, primarily targeting US military bases and energy infrastructure. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) are a main focus due to their close ties with Israel. The UAE Ministry of Defense reported Iran has fired over 1,000 drones and 200 ballistic missiles towards the UAE since the war began, with 71 drones and 2 missiles hitting targets; the rest were intercepted.
Global and Regional Impacts
Attacks targeting the UAE, particularly Dubai, have the highest potential for global consequences beyond the region, significantly impacting global energy markets. Matusiak also warned that prolonged disruptions to international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could severely impact food security in Middle Eastern nations, which heavily rely on food imports.
