Italian Mother Sues Son to Evict Him: “He Doesn’t Pay, He Doesn’t Clean”

An Italian mother in Ravenna took legal action against her 31-year-old son, demanding he move out due to his financial and domestic irresponsibility.

Mother Files Suit Against Son

A resident of Ravenna, Italy, filed a lawsuit against her 31-year-old son, requesting a court order for him to leave her home. The woman stated the situation had become unbearable, initiating the legal proceedings in 2024.

She alleged her adult son provided no financial or practical assistance, despite having steady employment, and failed to contribute to household expenses.

Son’s Employment Status During Legal Battle

During the court case, the 31-year-old unexpectedly resigned from his job, reportedly in an attempt to regain financial support from his mother and win the lawsuit. However, the judge was unmoved.

The judge determined he had voluntarily left his employment without actively seeking new opportunities.

Court Ruling and Eviction Order

The court sided with the mother, terminating her obligation to financially support her son and ordering him to vacate the premises by June 30th. He was also required to pay 3,000 euros in legal costs.

The court instructed the man to find new employment and independent housing.

Prevalence of Young Adults Living with Parents

Young adults living with their parents in Italy are colloquially known as “bamboccioni” (big babies). According to a 2024 report from GUS, 50.8% of Italians aged 25-34 live with their parents.

Poland has a similar rate at 52.9%. Over half of those aged 25-34 also live with their parents in Greece, Slovakia, Portugal, and Croatia.

Scandinavian Contrast

Scandinavian countries show significantly lower rates, with only 3.4-9.9% of citizens aged 25-34 living with their parents in Sweden and Finland. Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands fall within the 25-39.9% range.
