Italy and France Block US Military Access; Trump Expresses Fury

Italy and France have denied access to US forces and airspace, prompting a sharp rebuke from former President Trump, who criticized allies for lacking resolve.

Italy Denies Landing Permission for US Bombers

The Italian newspaper *Corriere della Sera* reported that several US bombers planned to land at the Sigonella base in Sicily en route to the Middle East, but no request for permission or consultation with Italian command was made.

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto clarified that the decision does not represent a complete ban on US use of the base, stating that the base remains active and operational, but that landing required authorization according to international agreements.

*Corriere della Sera* suggests the refusal will inevitably impact US-Italian relations, while Crosetto insists there is no hostility, as the US is well aware of the rules governing its presence in Italy since 1954.

France Blocks US Arms Transport to Israel

Reuters reports, citing two sources and a Western diplomat, that France has denied Israel access to its airspace for the transport of US weapons intended for use in a potential war against Iran.

Spain has reportedly taken a similar step.

Trump Criticizes Allies Over Iran Stance

Donald Trump, on his Truth Social platform, criticized countries like Great Britain for refusing to participate in a potential confrontation with Iran, suggesting they “buy from the USA” or “go and TAKE it.”

Trump further stated that the US will no longer assist allies who did not support it in the past, claiming Iran has been “virtually decimated.”

Trump Condemns France’s Actions

Trump subsequently criticized France for not allowing aircraft carrying military equipment to Israel to fly over its territory, and for being “VERY unhelpful” regarding the elimination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

He stated that the United States “will not forget” this, but also indicated he was not withdrawing from efforts to compel Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump’s Past Criticism of NATO Allies

Trump has repeatedly criticized European NATO members, particularly Great Britain, for not supporting the US-Israeli stance against Iran.

Iran has largely closed the Strait of Hormuz in response, causing a significant increase in oil prices.

US Engages in Indirect Talks with Iran

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed to Al Jazeera that indirect talks with Iran are underway.

Rubio stated that President Trump “always prioritizes diplomacy” and seeks a resolution, while also asserting that the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened within weeks and criticized NATO countries for lack of support.

Regime Change Remains US Preference

Rubio clarified that regime change in Iran remains the preferred outcome for the US, but is not the immediate goal of military operations.

The primary objectives are to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, launching attacks with missiles and drones, and sponsoring terrorism.
