The Italian government is suspending the automatic renewal of its defense cooperation agreement with Israel due to the current situation in the Middle East, according to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Meloni made the announcement during a visit to the Vinitaly wine fair in Verona.
Details of the Agreement
The protocol establishes a framework for cooperation in the field of defense, covering the exchange of military equipment and technological research for armed forces. It came into effect on April 13, 2016, and was renewed every five years.
Impact on Military Training
According to a source in the Italian Ministry of Defense, one consequence of the government’s decision is the cessation of cooperation with Israel in the area of military training.
Notification to Israel
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto sent a letter to his Israeli counterpart, Israel Katz, informing him of the government’s decision.
Recent Criticism of Israeli Actions
In recent weeks, the Meloni government has criticized Israeli attacks on Lebanon. Last Thursday, the Prime Minister also emphasized in parliament that Italy does not agree with the US regarding war with Iran.
Summoning of Israeli Ambassador
Last week, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tajani announced the summoning of the Israeli ambassador, to whom a protest was lodged regarding the shooting of an Italian UNIFIL peacekeeping mission vehicle in southern Lebanon by Israeli forces.
