Jagiellonian Law Professor and Former Supreme Court Judge Andrzej Wasilewski Dies at 86

Polish academic and former judge Professor Andrzej Wasilewski, 86, died on November 8 after a lifetime of legal scholarship and public service.

Academic Legacy

Dr. habil. Andrzej Wasilewski was a long‑standing professor at Jagiellonian University’s Faculty of Law and Administration. He chaired the Chairs of Administrative and Environmental Law and held a professorial rank since 1989.

Legal Contributions

Professor Wasilewski drafted numerous legal texts and expert opinions for state authorities, helping shape Poland’s rule‑of‑law framework. His work spanned administrative and economic law, environmental protection, and constitutional law.

Honours

In recognition of his services to justice, he was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Rebirth of Poland (Krzyż Komandorski). The Faculty described him as an “unsurpassed authority” and mentor to generations of lawyers.

Funeral Arrangements

The funeral will take place at Rakowicki cemetery in Kraków on Monday, November 17, at 9:40 am, following a service ordered by the Faculty of Law.
