Jaki Unveils PiS Plan for Accountability Commission with Special Powers

Facing a parliamentary motion to lift his immunity over administrative decisions, Law and Justice MEP Patryk Jaki has proposed the creation of a special investigative commission to challenge current legal proceedings.

Defense Against Immunity Motion

Patryk Jaki defended his ministerial record, arguing that daily personnel decisions are routine administrative tasks. He stated that questioning these appointments, which occur by the thousands within the Prison Service, undermines the stability of the state.

Comparing the legal scrutiny to the management of major sports clubs, Jaki dismissed the allegations as absurd and an embarrassment to the state. He questioned what prosecutors would do if they applied such standards to organizations like Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Proposed Special Investigative Commission

Jaki announced that the Law and Justice party intends to establish a special commission with penal powers in the next parliamentary term. He envisions this body as a venue to publicly question those responsible for what he describes as an attack on the state.

The politician maintains that every Polish citizen has the right to understand how the current accusations were formed. He explicitly characterized the request to lift his immunity as foolish and baseless.

Scope of the Prosecutor’s Investigation

Last week, Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek filed a request with the European Parliament to waive Jaki’s immunity and permit his detention. The motion follows an investigation into irregularities within the Prison Service between 2015 and 2023.

Prosecutors allege that Jaki, while serving as Deputy Minister of Justice, may have exceeded his authority and neglected his duties. Specifically, they point to instructions he allegedly gave the Prison Service to create a position for a specific official.
