Jerzy Substyk, a prominent Warsaw Uprising fighter and vice-president of the Warsaw Insurgents Association, has passed away at the age of 98, just months before his 99th birthday.

Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski confirmed the death of Jerzy Substyk, known by his nom de guerre “Jurny,” on social media. A hero of the capital, Substyk fought with the “Bartkiewicz” group in North Śródmieście before being taken as a prisoner of war by German forces.
Service and Combat History
Born in October 1927, Substyk served in the 1st “Perkun” platoon of the 3rd company of the “Bartkiewicz” group. He participated in the defense of positions near Mazowiecka and Kredytowa streets during the Warsaw Uprising, suffering two wounds in the process.
Post-War Life and Decorations
After returning to Poland in 1946, Substyk continued to be active in the veterans’ community. In 2004, President Aleksander Kwaśniewski awarded him the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, an honor Substyk described as a recognition for all his fallen comrades.
Final Years of Leadership
In his later years, Substyk served as the vice-president of the Warsaw Insurgents Association, representing the legacy of those who fought for the city’s freedom.
