Journalist Leszek K. Arrested Over Threats to Police Commander and Illegal Weapon Possession

Prosecutor Arkadiusz Buśkiewicz has taken over the case against journalist Leszek K., who stands accused of threatening the Piaseczno police commander with death while being found in possession of an illegal firearm.

Threats and Evidence

The investigation began after a threatening email was sent to the Piaseczno County Police, targeting the local commander. The message contained the sender’s personal data, a case reference number, and threats to kill the commander and anyone who attempted to intervene.

Authorities seized a weapon and ammunition from the suspect’s vehicle during a search. Prosecutors note a high probability that the email originated from an account belonging to Leszek K., citing the sender’s name and case details found in the message.

Denial and Defense Strategy

Leszek K. has pleaded not guilty to the charges of illegal possession of firearms and threatening a public official. He claims another person, whom he previously accused of threatening him, may be responsible for the actions.

While some reports suggest the possibility of a third party hacking the journalist’s account, the prosecution maintains that the evidence collected so far strongly supports the charges against the suspect.

Detention and Court Rationale

The District Court in Piaseczno approved the detention, citing a risk of flight and potential witness tampering. Officials noted the suspect frequently travels abroad and has a history of evading psychiatric examinations in a separate case involving family abuse.

The court also considered the suspect’s health and lack of treatment as factors contributing to the reality of the threats. Leszek K. faces a potential sentence of six months to eight years in prison.

Journalistic Concerns

The arrest has drawn attention from the Ombudsman and Press Club Polska, which have requested further justification for the three-month detention. Concerns were raised regarding the journalist’s right to defense and the protection of professional secrets.

The prosecution clarified that Leszek K. did not invoke journalistic privilege during the proceedings and voluntarily provided his phone and access passwords to investigators.
