Judge Asks Braun About Earnings; He Says He Would Call His Wife

During Grzegorz Braun’s first trial at Warsaw’s Praga‑Południe district court, the judge queried the politician’s income; Braun replied he would need to call his wife.

First Hearing at Praga‑Południe Court

On Monday, Grzegorz Braun’s first arraignment took place before the Praga‑Południe District Court in Warsaw. The 50‑year‑old politician faces seven criminal charges. Braun moved to exclude Judge Marcin Brzostka from the panel, but the request was dismissed.

Wage Inquiry and Braun’s Response

When asked by Judge Brzostka about his employment, Braun said he works “sporadically” at the European Parliament. He did not give a precise figure for his earnings, commenting that they are “adequate for the work performed.” To provide a more exact answer, he replied that he would need to call his wife.

When questioned about assets, Braun noted he owns “many books.” He also said he is a director and a storyteller, and that he denies any guilt and believes the accusations are politically motivated.

2024 Asset Declaration

The 2024 financial statement submitted in April 2025 shows Braun holding over 10 000 zł in savings and 1 200 € in cash. He declared no property assets. He reported that, as a member of the Polish Sejm, he earned more than 67 000 zł, which he described as only part of his “due” income because he thinks he is “systematically robbed by the Sejm Presidium.” He also earned over 46 000 € from his mandate in the European Parliament and more than 26 000 zł from copyright royalties. In the movable assets section, he listed “books.”

Charge Sheet and Allegations

Prosecutors filed the indictment in July, covering seven offences. The first relates to an incident on 1 March 2022 at the National Institute of Cardiology where Braun allegedly violated the personal integrity of Director Łukasz Szumowski by grabbing him by the shoulder and obstructing passage. The second offence concerns Braun allegedly assaulting Szumowski and accusing him of intoxication. Other charges include the 2023 incident where he used a fire extinguisher to douse Hanukkah candles in the Sejm, thereby violating another participant’s personal integrity, and an incident at the German Historical Institute where he blocked a Holocaust lecture. He is also accused of removing a Christmas tree from a Kraków court and throwing it into a bin.
