Judge Linked to “Hatred Affair” Accused of Intoxicated Crash

Judge Jakub Iwaniec, cited in the 2018‑2019 “hatred affair,” is accused of driving a car into a tree in Rejowiec Fabryczny, Poland on Oct. 11 2025 while allegedly intoxicated.

A vehicle collided with a tree at Rejowiec Fabryczny (Chełm County, Lublin Voivodeship) around 23:00 on Saturday, October 11, 2025. The driver proceeded to a nearby estate, where witnesses reported the incident to the police.

Investigation and Alcohol Test

The Krasnystaw District Prosecutor’s Office leads the initial inquiry. A breathalyzer test recorded 0.96 mg of alcohol per litre of exhaled air, approximately 1.8 ‰. Blood samples were also secured for further analysis.

Legal Proceedings and Immunity

On Monday, October 13, the case was transferred to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Zamość. Due to the judge’s protected status, the documents will be forwarded to the Internal Affairs Division of the National Prosecutor’s Office for an immunity‑revocation procedure.

Defense Statements

Attorney Michał Skwarzyński stated that his client was not driving but a passenger, and highlighted that the suspect’s phone was seized. The breath‑test reading of 1.8 ‰ confirmed by the police matches the prosecutor’s figure.

Jakub Iwaniec, linked to the 2018‑2019 “hatred affair,” allegedly collaborated with former Deputy Justice Minister Łukasz Piebiak. In February 2025, the Supreme Court’s Professional Responsibility Chamber denied removal of his immunity on one issue, and in late September the justice minister suspended the judge from official duties.
