Justice Minister Żurek Dismisses Speculation Over His Resignation

Following a Monday meeting at the Prime Minister’s office with Donald Tusk and cabinet members, Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek declared he has years of work ahead despite ongoing media rumors.

Minister Addresses Dismissal Rumors

Waldemar Żurek met with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, along with ministers Marcin Kierwiński, Radosław Sikorski, and Tomasz Siemoniak, on Monday. During an appearance on Polsat News, Żurek addressed media speculation regarding his potential dismissal, noting that the rumors were propagated by outlets that benefited financially from the Justice Fund under the previous administration.

The minister characterized the meeting as substantive and productive. He admitted that while some initiatives in his ministry have faced challenges, he maintains a long-term professional agenda. Żurek emphasized that he assumed his role during a period of significant difficulty and remains focused on his responsibilities.

Expectations and Accountability

Żurek described Prime Minister Tusk as a leader who demands concrete results. The minister stated that if the Prime Minister determines his mission is complete, he would step down without protest, yet he currently plans to continue his work for months and years to come. He is scheduled to meet with the Prime Minister again this week to discuss judicial developments and the case involving Zbigniew Ziobro.

Prosecution of Orlen Foundation Official

In his official correspondence on X, Żurek noted that the ministry is consistently addressing past irregularities. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw has filed an indictment against the former president of the Orlen Foundation, Katarzyna F., who faces up to 10 years in prison.

Investigators allege that the former president approved a donation of nearly 4.7 million PLN to the Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski Foundation for a project that was actually used to fund a political media campaign. The campaign promoted the “4 x NO” referendum in 2023 and attacked political opponents. Prosecutors have secured over 3 million PLN in assets from the suspect to cover the damages.
