Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek is considering an appeal for life imprisonment following the sentencing of an eight-year-old boy’s stepfather in Częstochowa, Poland.
Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek has announced plans to consult with prosecutors regarding a potential appeal of the Częstochowa District Court’s verdict in the death of eight-year-old Kamil. A decision will be made after the ministry reviews the written justification for the ruling.
The court sentenced the boy’s stepfather, Dawid B., to 25 years in prison, while the mother received 16 years. Minister Żurek noted that if prosecutors deem the sentences too lenient, the ministry will appeal and demand life imprisonment.
Possible Prosecution Appeal and Life Imprisonment Request
Minister Żurek stated that he would not make a final determination until the legal justification is reviewed, but noted that the prosecution had originally requested life imprisonment for the primary perpetrator. While describing the current sentence as severe, he emphasized that the mother also bears responsibility for failing to react to the child’s suffering.
Child Abuse and Appeal for Social Reaction
Minister Żurek highlighted that social indifference remains a major problem in such cases, stating that even the strictest laws are insufficient without widespread social mobilization. He urged citizens to react to any signs of violence, noting that intervention is better than inaction.
The Ministry of Justice intends to continue its work to strengthen child protection laws. Additionally, the Children’s Rights Ombudsman, Monika Horna-Cieślak, stated that Kamil’s siblings will appeal the sentences for both the stepfather and the mother, arguing the punishments are inadequate.
Investigative Findings: Brutal and Long-Term Child Abuse
Investigation findings reveal that on March 29, 2023, in Częstochowa, the stepfather poured boiling water on the boy, beat him, and threw him onto a glowing coal stove. The child died after 35 days of hospitalization from extensive burns and fractures.
Investigators determined the abuse was long-term, noting that Dawid B. had previously burned the boy with cigarettes and had also targeted other children in the family.
