Kaczyński Accuses Tusk of Undermining NATO, Acting on Berlin’s Orders

Jarosław Kaczyński sharply criticized Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s comments questioning US commitment to NATO’s Article 5, alleging Tusk is influenced by Berlin.

Kaczyński’s Criticism of Tusk’s Interview

Jarosław Kaczyński stated that Donald Tusk “once again fell for a trap” and carried out instructions from Berlin by attacking the United States and effectively questioning the validity of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which guarantees mutual, allied defense.

Kaczyński questioned whether Poland is governed by agents or individuals lacking political acumen, adding that Tusk is “destroying Polish-American relations” while Germany strengthens cooperation with the US on the NATO 3.0 concept.

Concerns Over Russian Narratives

Zbigniew Bogucki, Head of the President’s Chancellery, asserted that Tusk’s statement aligns with a subtle Russian narrative suggesting the Alliance is incapable of responding and can be divided.

Bogucki emphasized that questioning the unity of NATO and considering the reactions of individual members, particularly the US, is detrimental to Poland’s national interest and defense.

Tusk’s Comments on US Commitments

In an interview with the “Financial Times,” Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed doubts about the US commitment to Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, admitting he sometimes “has certain problems” believing it still holds.

Tusk acknowledged the US views Poland as a close ally but questioned how the commitment would function in practice “if something were to happen,” stating he wants guarantees on paper to translate into practical action.

Short-Term Threat Assessment

Tusk indicated a short-term perspective, focusing on months rather than years, regarding a potential Russian attack, stressing the importance of ensuring all allies take NATO obligations as seriously as Poland.

The White House has responded to Tusk’s statements.

Questioning European Priorities

A minister questioned why key European Union nations prioritized issues like bottle cap regulations and illegal migration over fulfilling their NATO alliance commitments regarding defense spending and military development, while the US urged them to do so.
