Jarosław Kaczyński alleges Prime Minister Donald Tusk acted on German directives by questioning the validity of NATO’s Article 5 mutual defense clause, damaging Polish-American relations.
Kaczyński Criticizes Tusk’s Statements
PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński accused Prime Minister Donald Tusk of being “manipulated” and carrying out “directives from Berlin” by questioning the relevance of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
Kaczyński further claimed Tusk is damaging Polish-American relations while Germany strengthens cooperation with the US on the concept of NATO 3.0.
Tusk’s Remarks in the Financial Times
The criticism stems from an interview with the Financial Times where Prime Minister Tusk expressed concerns about the reliability of Article 5, questioning whether it would hold in the event of a Russian attack.
Tusk emphasized the US considers Poland a close ally but raised doubts about practical application “if something were to happen.” He also called on the EU to strengthen its own mutual defense clause, Article 42(7).
Concerns Over US Commitment to NATO
The Financial Times noted Tusk’s statements reflect growing European unease following threats from former US President Donald Trump and his fluctuating commitment to defending the continent.
Understanding Article 5 of NATO
Article 5 of the NATO treaty states that an armed attack against one or more members in Europe or North America will be considered an attack against all.
Member states are obligated to provide assistance to the attacked country “as they deem necessary,” including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain security in the North Atlantic area. Activation requires a request from the attacked state and has only occurred once, following the 9/11 attacks on the US.
Kaczyński’s Further Criticism
On X (formerly Twitter), Kaczyński reiterated his accusation that Tusk attacked the US and undermined Article 5, questioning whether the government is led by agents or individuals lacking political ability. He described the diagnosis as “very mild and optimistic.”
