Jarosław Kaczyński, head of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party, attacked the legal case against former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro on X, saying the proceedings are revenge rather than justice, after a parliamentary committee moved to lift Ziobro’s immunity.
Kaczyński’s Twitter Attack
Kaczyński posted on X that the accusations against Ziobro are “written with a wet finger, have no legal basis, and were crafted on a political assignment by those who have risen from the current ruling side to profit.” He added that they are destroying a man who fought crime and that the prosecutor’s office and courts have been illegally taken over, framing the case as revenge rather than justice. Kaczyński cited Domanski’s statements as the truth and warned that “justice will come later.” The tweet appeared shortly after the parliamentary committee’s decision to lift Ziobro’s immunity.
Parliamentary Committee Votes to Lift Immunity
On Thursday evening, the parliamentary committee on procedural, parliamentary, and immunity matters approved the National Prosecutor’s request to lift Ziobro’s immunity, to allow his arrest and provisional detention. The committee’s positive recommendation will now be taken up by the Sejm, with a vote set for Friday.
Ziobro’s Absence and Budapest Plans
Ziobro was not present at the committee meeting. He had earlier held a press conference in Budapest, where he said he had a return ticket to Poland but had been warned that a criminal provocation would be staged against him, allegedly using false testimony. In a television interview, he cautioned against the current political climate, comparing it to a period when the law was applied subjectively.
Background of Legal Charges
In October, General Prosecutor Waldemar Zurek sent a request to Marshal Szymon Hołownia seeking to remove Ziobro’s immunity and authorize his arrest and temporary detention. The case relates to an investigation into the misappropriation of funds from the Justice Fund. Investigators allege that Ziobro, as Minister of Justice, committed 26 crimes, including allegedly directing a criminal organization.
