Polish PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński stated that a victory for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán would be crucial for changes within the European Union.
Kaczyński on the Future of Europe
Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the Polish PiS party, assessed in a Sunday interview with the Hungarian pro-government weekly “Mandiner” that “the victory of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán would be very important for Hungary, but also for Europe.” Parliamentary elections in Hungary will be held on April 12th.
A victory for Fidesz and Viktor Orbán would be very important for Hungary and for Europe, fitting into a predicted cycle of events – including their return to power in Poland and a right-wing victory in France – the former Polish prime minister stated.
Potential for a New European Force
Kaczyński believes a force capable of changing Europe could emerge. He emphasized the necessity of this, as the European Union is experiencing a crisis that could lead to its collapse, stating they do not desire this outcome but want a Union that serves as a coordination mechanism for sovereign countries.
Concerns About Opposition Leader Magyar
Kaczyński compared Peter Magyar, leader of the opposition TISZA party, to Donald Tusk, suggesting that a potential victory for TISZA could “lead to the collapse of the rule of law” in Hungary.
Criticism of Brussels and Berlin
The politician stated that increasingly, decisions are being made in Brussels or Berlin. He accused Ursula von der Leyen and Manfred Weber, President of the European Commission and leader of the European People’s Party, respectively, of implementing a “new German imperialism.”
Kaczyński’s Critique of Tusk’s Government
During the conversation, Kaczyński repeatedly criticized Prime Minister Tusk’s government, accusing it of “dismantling the rule of law” and causing a financial crisis in Poland. He asserted that they left the country in a good state after losing power in 2023, but now public debt is rising and the outlook is poor, claiming the current government cannot govern and serves “not Polish, but German interests.”
PiS Offensive and Upcoming Elections
The former prime minister noted that his party has launched an offensive, the results of which he believes are already visible.
Hungarian Elections on April 12th
Parliamentary elections in Hungary will be held on April 12th. The opposition party TISZA currently leads Fidesz, led by Prime Minister Orbán, in most independent polls. A March survey by Median showed a 23-point lead among determined voters. Polls linked to the government, however, indicate a several-percentage-point advantage for Fidesz.
On Monday, Polish President Karol Nawrocki visited Budapest, meeting with Prime Minister Orbán. The Hungarian Prime Minister enjoys the support of US President Donald Trump. The opposition leader, after a February meeting with Prime Minister Tusk, assured that if his grouping wins, they will immediately rebuild “Hungarian-Polish political, economic, and cultural relations” and give a new impetus to the Visegrád Group’s cooperation.
