Kaczyński Suspends PiS Official Over CPK Land Scandal

Kaczyński suspended former KOWR vice‑director Jerzy Wala after a 160‑hectare plot sold for 23 million zł could become a 400 million‑zł rail line to Warsaw’s new airport.

Kaczyński Suspends Jerzy Wala

On Thursday, October 28, Jarosław Kaczyński suspended former deputy director Jerzy Wala from PiS membership. Wala was slated to sign the land purchase contract and was also among those suspended. The decision followed a series of similar suspensions.

CPK Land Sale

On December 1, 2023, before PiS took office, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development approved the sale of 160 hectares of land for 23 million zł. The plot lies on the proposed high‑speed rail corridor between Warsaw and the new Central European Airport, potentially raising its value to 400 million zł.

Investigations into KOWR Officials

The prosecutor’s office launched an investigation on Tuesday concerning alleged overreach by KOWR Warsaw staff. The investigation focuses on the public officials involved in the land transfer.

Statement from Dawtona Vice‑President

Piotr Wielgomas, vice‑president of Dawtona, purchased the land as a farmer, citing the right of first purchase granted to lessees, and claimed ignorance of its inclusion in the airport’s plans. He released a formal statement about the transaction.

Political Scientist’s Assessment

Dr. habil. Robert Śweda of the Catholic University of Lublin described the suspensions as part of a “strategy of cutting damage” aimed at limiting image losses. He noted that the current PiS leadership is not dependent on the votes of the suspended members and that the moves could serve to temper opposition within the party.
