Kaczyński’s Outburst Against Mentzen’s Health Policy

Jarosław Kaczyński has harshly criticized Sławomir Mentzen, labeling his health voucher reform proposal as a threat to millions, amid deep-seated animosity and growing political friction within the Polish right-wing landscape.

A Hostile Relationship

The mutual dislike between the two politicians is no secret. Jarosław Kaczyński has publicly dismissed the Confederation leader’s role in politics as a misunderstanding, ruling out any coalition. In response, Sławomir Mentzen has characterized the PiS chairman as a political gangster, a liar, and a boor.

According to Newsweek, emotions flared over Mentzen’s proposed health care reform. Sources close to PiS report that when Mentzen’s health voucher concept was discussed in a private party meeting, Kaczyński erupted, pacing the room and shouting that Mentzen wanted to kill millions of people.

The Health Voucher Proposal

The health voucher is a core economic pillar for Mentzen, aiming to foster competition among medical facilities and dismantle the monopoly of the National Health Fund. The proposed value of the voucher is approximately 4,000 PLN per insured person annually.

Calculations for a Future Coalition

PiS does not rule out working with Confederation in a new government, though party insiders suggest they view Krzysztof Bosak as a more predictable partner than Mentzen. Tensions are rising within Confederation as both leaders appear to be maneuvering for potential coalition roles, with Bosak gravitating toward PiS and Mentzen leaning toward the Civic Coalition.

Internal Friction Over Defense Policy

Discord has deepened following Bosak’s public criticism of Mentzen, who recently insulted the Chief of the General Staff, Gen. Wiesław Kukuła. Mentzen had attacked the general’s professional competence and language regarding missile defense, while Bosak argued that military leaders should not be insulted.

Sources within Confederation describe the two men as having fundamentally different temperaments. Mentzen acts like a rapid-fire weapon, whereas Bosak is known for his deliberate and cautious approach to political rhetoric.
