Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz expressed concern on May 18 regarding President Trump’s decision to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, emphasizing that such restructuring must not compromise Poland’s security.
Concerns Over US Strategic Decisions
Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that it is difficult to accept the US decision to withdraw five thousand soldiers from Germany. Speaking after ceremonies in Dęblin, the Defense Minister emphasized that while reorganization processes are understood, they cannot occur at the expense of an ironclad ally like Poland.
The Minister stressed that Poland is a reliable and proven partner, and therefore expects true partnership, friendship, and effective information exchange. He expressed hope that these US decisions will not negatively affect the situation in Poland.
Dęblin Facility Investment
The Defense Minister addressed Polish-US relations during an event in Dęblin, where he and Prime Minister Donald Tusk participated in the signing of an agreement between Military Aviation Works No. 1 and Honeywell. The agreement involves establishing an Authorized Service Center for AGT1500 engines for M1 Abrams tanks in Dęblin.
Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that the investment creates jobs and develops the defense industry, serving as a symbol of positive cooperation. He reiterated that the reorganization of the American military presence cannot come at the cost of the United States’ greatest ally in Europe.
Demanding Transparency Between Allies
Highlighting shared investments and the construction of infrastructure for American troops, the Minister suggested that Poland’s commitment distinguishes it from other European nations. He added that such a partnership deserves honest communication between friends.
Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that it is difficult to be surprised by those trusted most. He expressed his belief that all misunderstandings will be clarified in the coming days.
Status of US Forces in Poland
Reuters previously reported that the Pentagon canceled plans for the rotational deployment of four thousand American soldiers to Poland. On May 15, President Karol Nawrocki met with Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Chief of the General Staff Gen. Wiesław Kukuła to discuss the US presence.
On May 16, Bartosz Grodecki, head of the National Security Bureau, stated on X that the President emphasizes the need to support the increase of US forces in Poland. He noted that the presence of the closest ally strengthens NATO’s eastern flank and enhances security and deterrence.
