Kosiniak-Kamysz Seeks Non-Partisan Candidate for Krakow Mayoral Race

Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has called for a unifying, non-partisan mayoral candidate in Krakow to challenge Łukasz Gibała, stressing that the ruling coalition must present a joint, energetic front.

A Call for Non-Partisan Leadership

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated on Monday that Krakow needs a serious, responsible leader capable of bridging diverse political and social divides. He emphasized that the candidate should not carry a party label, as a narrowly defined political profile would struggle to defeat opponent Łukasz Gibała.

Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed his readiness to cooperate with various social and political groups to secure such leadership. He noted that he expects understanding and unity from coalition partners, viewing the upcoming local election as a critical test of their national governing alliance.

Competing Ambitions Within the Coalition

While the Deputy Prime Minister searches for a broad consensus, the Left has already signaled its own intentions. Party leader Włodzimierz Czarzasty declared that the Left intends to contest the election, asserting that Warsaw should not dictate local decisions and that the choice must remain in the hands of Krakow’s residents.

Media reports have speculated that Deputy Minister of Sport and Tourism Ireneusz Raś might be a candidate, though Kosiniak-Kamysz refrained from confirming names, stating that information will be released once a formal decision is made.

The Electoral Context in Krakow

The push for a new candidate follows the recall of Krakow’s president, Aleksander Miszalski, in a Sunday referendum. While 171,581 residents voted for his removal, the City Council remained intact due to insufficient turnout.

Early election preparations are underway, with candidates like Marian Banaś and Bartosz Bocheńczak of the Confederation already expressing interest. Łukasz Gibała is widely expected to run, and Małgorzata Wassermann is frequently mentioned as a potential candidate for Law and Justice (PiS).
