Polish Minister of Agriculture confirms KGS won’t take over Carrefour due to economic concerns after thorough analysis.
Decision Made After Analysis
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Stefan Krajewski stated that the idea of purchasing the Carrefour network is now closed, confirming that a decision has been made after thorough analysis.
Economic Justification Lacking
According to Krajewski, capital involvement by the National Consumer Group (KGS) in the Carrefour network would not currently have economic justification. The minister emphasized that besides political decisions, the economic factor is crucial and everything must “add up” colloquially.
Ministry Seeks Alternative Solutions
The ministry is looking for other solutions to address challenges arising from supply chain disruption related to war, natural disasters, and weather anomalies. Krajewski noted that previous decisions made solely on political grounds later required economic compensation.
Previous Recommendation
At the end of last November, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development had recommended that the National Consumer Group take over the Carrefour store network and continue work on consolidating state assets in the food trade.
Alternative View
Deputy Minister of State Assets Grzegorz Wrona stated in January that acquiring Carrefour would not be a good solution as it would mean taking over a network that has problems. He suggested that instead of acquiring foreign networks, Poland should focus on developing existing domestic networks.
