Krakow Decides: Referendum on Mayor and City Council Underway

Residents of Krakow are heading to the polls today to determine the future of Mayor Aleksander Miszalski and the city council in a referendum that requires a specific voter turnout.

The Referendum Process

Krakow is holding a referendum today where residents will decide if Mayor Aleksander Miszalski will be removed from office and if the current city council will be dismissed. The validity of the vote depends on meeting a turnout threshold of approximately 27 percent of eligible voters.

Polling Stations and Procedures

Voting takes place in 453 polling stations, which opened at 7:00 a.m. Of these, 412 are permanent locations, while 41 are special precincts located in hospitals, social care facilities, and correctional institutions.

Voters receive two ballots—one concerning the mayor and the other for the city council. A valid vote requires marking an “X” in the box next to “YES” or “NO.”

Turnout Requirements

For the referendum to be binding, at least 158,555 residents must cast a vote regarding the mayor, while the threshold for the city council is 179,792 voters. According to the National Electoral Office, there are 585,228 eligible voters in Krakow.

Voter Eligibility and Closing Times

Eligible participants must hold active voting rights and be permanent residents of Krakow. Voting takes place at the commission assigned to the address registered in the Central Voter Register.

Polling stations will close at 9:00 p.m. The Krakow branch of the National Electoral Office expects to announce the official results on Monday morning.
